God Was Then, and He Is Now — Forever Faithful

Scripture: Psalm 145:13–18

“The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.” — Psalm 145:13

There is something deeply comforting about knowing that God does not change. Life changes. People change. Circumstances change. Our emotions change. One day we can feel strong and full of faith, and the next day we can wake up anxious, tired, discouraged and wondering, “God, where are You?” But our feelings do not determine God’s faithfulness. God was faithful then. God is faithful now. And God will be faithful forever.

Psalm 145 reminds us that the Lord is faithful to His promises and that He is near to those who call upon Him in truth. What a beautiful reminder for everyday life. Sometimes we look back at our lives and realise that there were situations we thought would break us, but somehow, we came through. There were doors we thought would never open, yet God made a way. There were prayers we prayed for years, and eventually we saw the answer. There were moments when we didn’t understand what God was doing, but looking back, we can see that He was working even when we couldn’t see Him. And sometimes the greatest testimony isn’t that God changed the situation. Sometimes the testimony is “God carried me through it.”

Consider Joseph! Joseph is a powerful example of God’s unchanging faithfulness. Joseph had dreams of greatness, but before those dreams were fulfilled, his life seemed to go in completely the opposite direction. His own brothers betrayed him. He was thrown into a pit. He was sold into slavery. He was falsely accused. He was imprisoned. If Joseph had judged God’s faithfulness by his circumstances, he could easily have thought to himself that God had forgotten him. But God had not forgotten Joseph. God was with him in the pit. God was with him in slavery. God was with him in prison. And God was with him in the palace. The location changed. But God didn’t. The circumstances changed. But God didn’t. Joseph’s position changed. But God didn’t. And eventually, Joseph could look back and understand that God had been faithfully working through every chapter.

That is something we need to remember in our own lives. Perhaps you are currently in a “pit” season. Perhaps you’re waiting for an answer to prayer. Perhaps you’re worried about your finances, your family, your future, your work or a decision you have to make. Perhaps everything around you seems uncertain. But, know this, uncertainty does not mean God is absent. You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you know who holds tomorrow. God is faithful in the ordinary. We often look for God’s faithfulness in the big miracles. But God’s faithfulness is also found in ordinary everyday moments. It’s waking up in the morning and having the strength to get out of bed and face the day’s challenges. It’s receiving the encouragement you needed at exactly the right moment. It’s having food on the table. It’s having someone call when you needed to hear a familiar voice. It’s finding peace in the middle of something that should have overwhelmed you. It’s looking back and saying, “I don’t know how I got through that, but God.”

Sometimes we are so focused on the miracle we’re waiting for that we fail to recognise the miracles God has already performed. Every morning we wake up is another reminder that His mercy has carried us this far. Psalm 145 says, “The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.” Think about that. God cares about the needs of His children. He isn’t only interested in the enormous moments of our lives. He cares about our daily needs too. The bills. The children. The job. The appointment. The journey. The conversation we’re nervous about. The decision we’re struggling to make. The quiet tears nobody else sees. God is faithful in all of it.

But what about when God seems silent? When we can’t hear His still voice or see His Mighty hand calming our storm. This is where faith becomes real. It’s easy to say, “God is faithful,” when everything is going well. But what happens when the prayer hasn’t been answered? What happens when the door remains closed? What happens when we don’t understand God’s timing? Faith says, “Even when I don’t understand Him, I will trust Him.” Joseph couldn’t see the palace from the prison. But God could. We may not see what God is preparing from where we are standing today. But God sees the whole picture. Psalm 145:17 says, “The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.” Notice that it doesn’t say God is faithful only when life goes according to our plans. It says He is faithful in all He does. That means we can trust Him even in the waiting. We can trust Him when the answer is “yes.” We can trust Him when the answer is “not yet.” And sometimes, we have to trust Him when the answer is different from what we wanted.

Because God’s faithfulness isn’t measured by whether He gives us everything we ask for. His faithfulness is measured by His character. And His character never changes. God was then. God is now. The same God who parted the Red Sea is still God today. The same God who protected Daniel in the lions’ den is still God today. The same God who sustained Elijah is still God today. The same God who restored Peter after his failure is still God today. The same God who carried Joseph from the prison to the palace is still God today. And the same God who has brought you through every difficult season you’ve already survived is still God today. If He was faithful yesterday, He hasn’t stopped being faithful today.

Your circumstances may have changed. Your age may have changed. Your relationships may have changed. Your responsibilities may have changed. Your relationships may have changed. Your plans may have changed. But God has not changed. And because He does not change, we can face tomorrow with confidence. Psalm 145:18 says, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” So today, whatever you are facing, call on Him. If you’re tired, call on Him. If you’re afraid, call on Him. If you’re confused, call on Him. If you’re grateful, call on Him. If you’re waiting, call on Him. If you don’t know what to do next, call on Him. He is near. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to know how the story ends. You simply have to know the One who is writing the story.

In this time of fasting, take a moment and look back over your life. Remember the things you once thought you would never survive. Remember the prayers you once cried over. Remember the doors God opened. Remember the times He protected you. Remember the moments He gave you strength when you had none left. And then say, “Lord, You were faithful then. You are faithful now. And I believe You will be faithful forever.” Because God is not faithful because life is always good. God is faithful because He is God. His promises don’t expire. His love doesn’t run out. His presence doesn’t disappear. His mercy is new every morning. And His faithfulness reaches from generation to generation. God was then. God is now. God will be tomorrow. And God will be forever faithful.
